Things for Americans to do in Manchester, UK

Things to see:
Town Hall - there’s a cafe in the sculpture hall just near the main front door.
Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) - lots of varied exhibits, from
early trains to early computers to a recreation of a sewer
Manchester Gallery - decent small gallery, a bit pre-raphaelite heavy.
John Rylands Library - looks like Hogwarts (also Chethams Library)
Afflecks Palace - 4 storey building with lots of stalls mostly selling
clothes to emo kids but with a few good oddities here and there.
Salford Lad’s Club - you’ve got to go and take the Smiths picture.
Castlefield basin - Manchester’s industrial graveyard. 2 canals, 2 railways, a tramline and yuppie condos. Cute for a wander.

Food:
Mr Thomas’ Chop House - nice victorian tiled pub with a restaurant
that serves classy versions of old english meals and lots of flat warm
beer
Rusholme - mile of curry houses and neon signs south of the city - Mughli is the only one worth going to though,
or Falafel for casual dining.
Castle Hotel - home of the Manchester Egg
Hunters (or Yadgers or This and That cafe) - Rice and 3 curries, under a fiver

Drinks:
Sinclairs Oyster Bar / Old Wellington - oldest buildings in town.
Sinclairs also probably has the cheapest drinks in town.
Cloud 23 - try hard cocktail bar on the 23rd floor of the massive
Beetham Tower at the other side of Deansgate. Drinks cost about as
much as the tickets for the tourist ferris wheel in Piccadilly gardens
and you can see further!
Port Street Beer House - best beer bar in town.
Marble Arch Inn - 125 year old brewpub with a decent menu - the city’s
best brewery.
Liar’s Club - Tiki bar with over 100 rums, all the Cuban contraband you can’t get back home.
Crown & Anchor - awesome ceiling
Font, Oxford Road - Cheap cocktails and great beer selection
Palace Hotel Bar - ALL THE TILES on the inside
Pevril of the Peak - ALL OF THE TILES on the outside

Going out:
Star & Garter - Dirty old victorian pub near the railway that does some fun discos upstairs while retaining the standard pub downstairs.
Kraak - Wide selection of excellent nights. Pick something and go.
Cornerhouse - Art house cinema / gallery / cafe / bar
Gorilla - Decent sound system, nice venue for gigs. Food is meant to be ok too.
